Wikinews is an online news service established in 2004 with the motto, "the free news source you can write".
It is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation, a United States-based 501(c) registered non-profit (i.e. a charity). The Foundation is also responsible for Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia; this being one of the most popular sites on the Internet.
Almost-unique among Wikimedia projects, Wikinews has specific policies permitting original reporting. This site, Wikinewsie.org, has been set up specifically to assist in such endeavours. The project has policies whereby trusted community members are accredited and considered favoured freelance contributors.
Wikinewsie.org, owned, and managed by, Brian McNeil provides non-public collaboration space, reporter email facilities, and an independent site, for independent journalists.
This website is volunteer-operated for freelance journalists intent on publishing on Wikinews. Whilst acknowledged by the Wikimedia Foundation, and granted permission to use Wikinews-related marks, it is wholly independent from the Foundation.
